Why Choose a Childminder

Leaving your precious one with someone for the first time can be a daunting experience. There are many different childcare options available and you naturally want what is best for your child, but have you ever considered using a Childminder.

About Childminders

Childminders provide full and part time high quality childcare in their own homes from babies through to secondary school and are self employed. All Childminders (and anyone looking after a non-related child in their own home for more than 2 hours a day) must, by law, be registered with OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education).

Before a Childminder can become registered they must attend a local authority Childminder pre-registration course, attend an Early Years First Aid Course (which needs to be renewed every 3 years) and gain a qualification currently called ‘Introduction to Childcare Practice’.

Ofsted will:

Visit the Childminder’s home to check they are suitable to care for children and will set a limit on how many children can be cared for at any one time.

Carry out a CRB check on the Childminder and other members of the household over the age of 16 to ensure they have not been convicted of an offence against a child

Require all Childminders to take out Public Liability Insurance

Require all Childminders to work in line with the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which concentrates on children aged from birth to the 31st August following their 5th birthday. Further details can be found at: www.nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/node/151379

Once registration is complete the Childminder will be inspected 6 months later and be graded Outstanding, Good, Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. Inspections will then take place either in 1, 2 or 3 years depending on the grade.

10 Advantages Of Using a Childminder

  • Childminders look after a small group of children so can offer plenty of individual attention.
  • Childminders are often more flexible about pick up and drop off times. This is particularly useful if you work shifts.
  • Most Childminders are parents themselves so you know you are leaving your child with someone who is experienced and confident.
  • Children can benefit from interaction with other children in the Childminder’s care, as there is usually a range of ages.
  • Competitively priced in comparison to a Nursery.
  • Know the local area really well and will take your child out and about to toddler groups and activities.
  • Inspected by OFSTED every 1-3 years to ensure high standards are being met.
  • Childminders give children the opportunity to learn from real life experiences. Everyday activities like shopping trips, school runs and visits to the park teach children valuable life skills.
  • Childminders tend to live near the family they work with so less travelling for all involved. What often starts as a childminding arrangement becomes a strong friendship that lasts for years.
  • Using a registered Childminder means that you may be able to get help with your childcare costs through the childcare element of Working Tax Credit (WTC). To find out more, ring 0845 300 3900 or Visit the Tax Credits website
